An amazing sight along the Road to Hana are the Great Frigate birds, known locally as “iwa” (pronounced ee-va) these birds can be spotted soaring above the Keanae Coast. The males are all black, the females black with white breasts and the young are black with white heads and breasts, making it easy to distinguish between them. They utilize the warm, thermal currents to spiral upwards hundreds of feet without even flapping a wing. A truly awe inspiring sight! Hana Picnic Co. has more information on these and other birds common on Maui.
