The Road to Hana has a total of 59 bridges, 46 of which are only one lane wide. Amazingly, all but one of these is the original bridge, built in 1910 when the Hana Highway was first completed. Only one was so damaged by erosion that it had to be replaced. Today that site has a portable steel Bailey Bridge, placed there by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
