Near Hana you will see a small, rugged island, that seems to appear out of nowhere,  several hundred yards off the coast. This is Alau Island and what  draws peoples’ interest is the fact that there is a small copse of Palm trees on the top. Local stories have it that over a decade ago, a group of adventurous youths swam out to the island and planted the trees. Alau Island is also a Bird Sanctuary and  every year it is the scene of the Alau Island Canoe races, where local teams race around the Island. Get more details, and directions from Hana Picnic Co.
